Engaging and structured vocabulary lessons

Like a Year 9 student repeatedly asking to go to the toilet, the research on vocabulary echoes time and time again. A broad and robust vocabulary is essential for students to thrive, not only academically but also in social interactions and communication. Language unlocks doors, reveals the world of reading, and forms the foundation for progress. Moreover, vocabulary directly correlates with GCSE attainment, employment prospects, socio-economic status, social mobility, and mental health.

Are the increasing demands of the curriculum proving too much for your students' vocabulary?

Are you looking for a high-quality and meaningful form-time resource?

Are you ready to put robust vocabulary teaching at the heart of your school or college?

In a recent survey conducted by Oxford University Press, teachers reported that at least 40% of their pupils lacked the vocabulary necessary to access their learning. This same research also warns that if this situation is left unaddressed, it worsens, with 60% of secondary school teachers surveyed believing that the vocabulary gap is growing. While certain student groups may be more likely to have a limited vocabulary, in reality, the word gap affects all students and is the strongest predictor of success both within and outside the classroom.

Government initiatives have focused on addressing this issue in the early years, but what about higher up the education system, particularly in secondary school and college? Given the increasing demands of the curriculum and the shift to linear qualifications, it is crucial to level the playing field. We must provide all students with enhanced opportunities to access the academic language and expand their future prospects beyond the classroom.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are the lessons suitable for all year groups?

Our vocabulary lessons have been carefully designed to be effectively delivered to different year groups simultaneously. For example, we include a range of synonyms and antonyms to allow for differentiation. The teaching PowerPoints have the option to simplify tasks. Teaching the same vocabulary to all students makes the scheme easy to implement and monitor. Furthermore, it provides the opportunity for students to hear the words in different contexts. Staff are encouraged to use the word in their lessons that week, thus exposing students to the word in a variety of forms and subjects. This is essential for depth of understanding and vocabulary retention. For SEND students we have an adapted workbook that to support them with their learning.

Are the videos appropriate for younger students?

We have sourced video clips that not only provide context for the vocabulary being taught but also engage students. While some clips are taken from films with older ratings, our clips do not contain inappropriate language, scenes of a sexual nature, or drug use.

How are the resources shared?

When you place an order, we will request a copy of your school logo, which will be embedded into the students’ workbook and then sent to you as a PDF document. The teaching presentations and other resources will be available through the password protected member pages on our website. You will receive the password via email along with the workbook.

How could I implement the scheme in my school?

As training and detailed plans are provided, we are certain this will be a pick up and go scheme. CPD videos will ensure staff can implement the scheme with ease. Scode is ideal for form time or can be delivered in specific literacy lessons. Scode can be delivered to whole classes or small intervention groups.
